CROSS-POLLINATION CXXXIV - TUES MAR 20TH - 7:30-10 PM
KEVIN JOHNSTON
JESSI ROBERTSON

After a painful handful of months mid-2005, which we'll call "A Major Hiatus" from his band Adios Esposito, Kevin set out to "keep on keepin on" by writing new songs in the basement, and performing them live in Denver; both solo, and with the support of Eli Thomas (co-member of Adios Esposito).

Landing in New York City in October of 2005, Kevin and Eli hoped to reform a new band with new personel, and rock-off any nearby socks. As of September '06, Pete Moses (of the Selfsame) has been coerced into playing drums with the aforementioned sock-rockers.

Elsewhere, Kevin performs solo in the subway, at the Sidewalk Cafe's Monday night anti-hootenanny, Bar4's open mic, and other seedy joints on a regular basis. He also writes about himself in the third person. Finally, he encourages YOU to rock on.

"This New York singer-songwriter draws comparisons to equally spirited alt-folk muses Tori Amos and PJ Harvey. But with her quavering, spiritual verses, the analogy she deserves is with Jeff Buckley, gender difference or no."

When asked to describe her musical style, Jessi Lehr aka Jessi Robertson smiles and turns to a friend, "What do YOU think my music sounds like?" There has never been an easy answer to that question. Comparisons have been drawn to widely different artists from Jeff Buckley to Rickie Lee Jones. No one seems to know quite how to classify Jessi, who is anything but a typical singer/songwriter.

She is a passionate and confident performer, exerting a magnetic hold over her audience. Raw emotion percolates beneath the surface, and you can only hold your breath and wonder if it will slowly subside or relentlessly boil over. More poet than songwriter, Jessi's music explores the complexity of emotion and inner conflict. Her dark, mischievous sense of humor is tempered by an unshakeable faith in the soul's ability to triumph over adversity. You could call her a cynical romantic and you wouldn't be far off the mark.

After four years in the New York music scene, Jessi has been included in several documentaries, received awards from Garageband.com and Mixposure.com, and been invited to compete in the 3rd Annual Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition.
