CROSS-POLLINATION CLIX - TUES SEP 18TH - 7:30-10 PM
DALLIN APPLEBAUM
MARIO SPINETTI

Dallin Applebaum can’t remember a time in her life before music. “I’d like to think that music is my first language because I’ve always heard it and spoken it,” she says.

Trained as a classical pianist, Dallin cut her teeth on Chopin, Bach, and Beethoven. At the same time, exposure to her parents’ favorite music – artists such as The Beatles, Billy Joel, Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, The Eagles, and Sting – infused Dallin with a lifelong love for classic rock and well-crafted pop.

Music moves Dallin – all styles, any period, honest songs get deep inside her. You can tell when she performs her own piano-based, harmony-laced pop songs – solo, backed by her band, or as a member of the New York City rock ensemble Funky Butter.

Dallin began writing songs at age thirteen. Throughout high school she performed in local Philadelphia-area venues, gaining a following and generating critical acclaim. For her, writing meaningful, emotionally honest music is an opportunity to grow as a human being. Influenced by contemporary artists including Fiona Apple, Jon Brion, Silverchair, and Patty Griffin, Dallin crafts pop music that strives to be something more. “I want to write a great pop song,” she says. “And then use that song as a starting point for something bigger.”

These days, as a music technology major at New York University, Dallin’s sharpening her songwriting and performance skills while mastering recording technology. She’s also busy on the New York City music scene performing at the Bitter End, Sidewalk Café, the Bowery Poetry Club, and CBGB’s Gallery.

Mario Spinetti grew up in the backstage wings of the opera house. The son of two leading opera singers, he found it difficult to differentiate the magnitude of the productions on stage from his everyday life. And so, from very early on, Mario found himself taking on larger-than-life roles.

After spending most of his formative years traveling Europe with his parents, Mario returned to his hometown of New York at age 12. He had arranged, directed, and performed musical compositions for major television networks in the city by age 13. At 16, he had taken a solo bow at Carnegie Hall, and headlined a week-long tour in Mexico a year later.

A painful divorce left Mario both estranged from his parents, and in an abusive household situation that sent him seeking refuge within his mind. He came to understand that the emotions swirling within him were too complex to harness, and instead, created a series of different characters to help better understand the situation ( i.e. Jane, Jacqueline, Eve, Annabelle).

He began developing the characters through song and as he continued to write, the characters continued to grow and inform him of his inner workings.
