CROSS-POLLINATION XIX - TUES SEP 7TH - 7:30-10 PM
PAULA VALSTEIN
AMY HILLS

Raised in beautiful and unpredictable Israel, Paula started playing classical piano at the age of 5, 4 hours a day. She began to compose original music at the age of 6, using favorite poems from her mother’s huge library books.
At 14, she realized she had no real friends, her best friends being the gifted Chopin, Debusy and Bach.
At 15, Paula shocked her teachers at a school classical concert when she snuck her band in to sing her rock music. The audience stood to their feet but the teachers took valium to recover.
That night ignited a passion for Paula to continue to perform her original music live! She has played at all the top major festivals in Israel: Festival of Jazz and Love (Jerusalem), The International Jazz festival at the Red Sea 2003 in Eilat, The Opera house of Tel Aviv playing with bassist Omer Avital, and has also played at many of the largest rock venues in Israel . Her influences range from Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, Bob Dylan, Chick, Billy Holiday, Leonard Cohen to PJ Harvey, Tori Amos and Radiohead. Since her arrival to New York, she has integrated into the east village singer/songwriters scene, resulting in a strong following. Her band includes some of the most talented musicians in NY, Emek Rave-bass, Bashi Nickens- drums, Greg Pettito – e.guitar, and Paul Evans-sax. Currently, Paula is working on her first album.
"Music for me is a passion that I have been breathing since I can remember. It is what I am, it is my truth, and nothing in this world has ever moved me more, to touch people in any other way".

Amy's new record is being produced by Thomas Kobrick and is set for release winter of 2007. It will feature a mix of songs from her last album "Heroine" (2004 Fine Large Cat) and newer tunes.
