CROSS-POLLINATION CXCIX - TUES JUL 8TH - 7:30-10 PM
DALLIN APPLEBAUM
TEREU TEREU

Dallin Applebaum can’t remember a time in her life before music. “I’d like to think that music is my first language because I’ve always heard it and spoken it,” she says.

Trained as a classical pianist, Dallin cut her teeth on Chopin, Bach, and Beethoven. At the same time, exposure to her parents’ favorite music – artists such as The Beatles, Billy Joel, Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, The Eagles, and Sting – infused Dallin with a lifelong love for classic rock and well-crafted pop.

Music moves Dallin – all styles, any period, honest songs get deep inside her. You can tell when she performs her own piano-based, harmony-laced pop songs – solo, backed by her band, or as a member of the New York City rock ensemble Funky Butter.

Dallin began writing songs at age thirteen. Throughout high school she performed in local Philadelphia-area venues, gaining a following and generating critical acclaim. For her, writing meaningful, emotionally honest music is an opportunity to grow as a human being. Influenced by contemporary artists including Fiona Apple, Jon Brion, Silverchair, and Patty Griffin, Dallin crafts pop music that strives to be something more. “I want to write a great pop song,” she says. “And then use that song as a starting point for something bigger.”

These days, as a music technology major at New York University, Dallin’s sharpening her songwriting and performance skills while mastering recording technology. She’s also busy on the New York City music scene performing at the Bitter End, Sidewalk Café, the Bowery Poetry Club, and CBGB’s Gallery.

Blurb: "If you took Thom Yorke's most frenetic performance combined it with the seductively smooth riffs of Spoon, threw in TVOTR's sweating intensity, and then topped it all off with a jazz band fresh from Jackson Square—you just might get Tereu Tereu."
--Patrol Magazine

Having grown up in the shadow of DC bands like Fugazi and Q and not U, the members of Tereu Tereu always admired innovation and sonic exploration. The nation's capital has shaped some of the most aggressively original acts over the years, which the members of Tereu Tereu have been fortunate enough to witness, embrace, and absorb. When the band formed in early 2006, this adventurous spirit was paired with a shared admiration of 60's pop records and the clever sensibilities of great artists like Brian Wilson and David Byrne.

Beginning as a guitar and drums two-piece, the band grew from noisy post-punk duo into a formidable rock outfit encompassing rhythmically complex basslines and lofty trumpet work. They continue to grow artistically and craft unusual but memorable melodies with varying instrumentation. The current sound of the band has been compared to everyone from Elvis Costello to Broken Social Scene.

"Jagged chords salted with interludes of earnest, yearning melody... deceptively breezy trumpet figures with evocative vocals..."
