CROSS-POLLINATION XXXII - TUES DEC 7TH - 7:30-10 PM
DAVID LK MURPHY
DAVE DEPORIS

Born and raised in New York City, Elkay, as his friends call him, grew up playing cello, drums, a little piano and even some trumpet. Submerged in the lower eastside music scene at a young age Murphy picked up the guitar and started writing songs at thirteen. Like a bluesman waltzing to mozart Murphy's songs are hypnotic and rough, both intimate and candid. Born from a mouth of sharpened teeth and delivered with lilting precision his lyrics draw from poetry and pop alike.

Six songs long, with a supporting cast of rising stars, "Goodbye" is a departure from standard folk and indie-acoustic fair. Joined by sirens Sarah Bowman (The Bowmans) and Erin Regan, Murphy's voice rises from the ghostly chorus of Shilpa Ray's harmonium (Beat the Devil), shining throughout the songs.

There is a tension in his music. The tension that rises from singing the unspoken. Like the blues, Murphy's songs are triumphant even in their melancholy. His music bears this out, carrying a subtle joy even as his songs hint at death itself.

Born in New York City, Dave Deporis is a classically trained violinist who swapped the violin and bow for a guitar and notebook.

Taking inspiration from 80's punk bands like the Minutemen, Dead Kennedys, Ramones and Black Flag as well as the wondrous and wide cannon of world music, he is currently putting the finishing touches on his visionary and unique second record "For The Birds and Children," a fiercely non-elitist journey through the backstreets of the mind and the early morning hours, a map of dreams, conflagrations and landscapes stretched out over a compact disc.
