CROSS-POLLINATION CCLXXXIV - TUES MAY 18TH - 7:30-10 PM
PEARL AND THE BEARD
MATT SINGER

Pearl and the Beard formed in September of 2007 in a little town called Brooklyn, which sits quaintly upon the shores of New York. It was kismet that brought its two members Jocelyn Mackenzie and Jeremy Styles together in a local watering hole, where they vented frustrations with the solo artist scene over some loudmouth soup. After finding they were both insane enough to put their eggs into one proverbial basket, they decided to musically elope, abandoning any hopes of living normal, quiet lives waiting for arthritis to course through their once musically-infused bones and dust to collect on their vocal chords.

And so, with food in their pockets and money in their bellies, they sat down to play. Jeremy’s robust guitar chords were peanut butter to Jocelyn’s melodic and lyrical jelly. Their voices climbed and plummeted gracefully side by side and ploughed through the crystal air like cannon balls. Jeff Buckley and Johnny Cash were brought back from the dead and Neko Case served them red wine.

As every great journey begins with a single step, so Pearl and the Beard then began on their trek by self-producing their first EP “At Home with Pearl and the Beard.” Literally recording at home and sampling such household items as benches, keys, hampers, stairs, and the washing machine, the two managed to create a sound born from honesty, familiarity, nostalgia, crackling firewood, and honey.

From there, this nascent duo pledged to spread forth their music unremittingly amongst the magnitude, relentlessly booking shows in the Great City in which they were conceived, and now branching out to surrounding areas in hopes of sharing their unencumbered aural offspring with as many souls as will listen.

And now we pray that you too may lend your ears to our songs, and that they bring to you as much delight and satisfaction as creating them has brought to us.

"Everyone will find their favorite part, but the jury is still out on me - I can't pick just one moment. It's all so good." - Underrated Magazine

"Matt Singer writes to amuse himself, and that's a good thing. His perspective is delightfully warped with a strong wit and wrapped in gorgeously melodic songwriting." - Wildy's World

"His sardonic, side-splitting, politically-infused lyrics - thinly veiled in catchy melodic, folksy hooks - make you ask, "did he really just say that?," usually followed by an uncontrollable, belly-aching laugh. Plus, he can whistle like a piping hot tea kettle." - My Musical Crush
