CROSS-POLLINATION LXXXIII - TUES JAN 31ST - 7:30-10 PM
JONES STREET BOYS
MICHAEL DAVES

“Listening is like running down a mountain on a switchback trail, the sound of surprise generating its own momentum. There's a punk glee inside the bluegrass craft--and a punk vehemence inside the bluegrass smile.”
--Greil Marcus

“For a band of Brooklynites, the Jones Street Boys kick up a pretty good hillbilly stomp on Overcome (Smith Street). They play their catchy originals with virtuosic mandolin jams and honky-tonk piano fillers, and top them with off-kilter, good-time harmonies.”
--Time Out New York

Michael Daves lives in Brooklyn, NY where he plays music of various sorts (mostly bluegrass, country, and rock), teaches guitar and mandolin and records/produces music. He grew up in Decatur, GA around a lot of southern music (and garage rock). In college he "got all heady and into jazz" but since then he's been using fewer and fewer notes and chords. Nowadays he may simply say fuck it all and just make loud noises. And sing. Really high.

His group, The Bluegrass Mob, raises the roof in the old-time way. At a time when the Bluegrass world is dominated by reverent, sanitized acts, the Mob invokes the fire of the early Bluegrass heroes -- Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin, and others -- who embodied the visceral, iconoclastic essence of rock n' roll before its time. They play as if Bluegrass Boys had been hanging out with the Ramones rather then the Kingston Trio.
