JOY
FINIAN MCKEAN

Formed by longtime friends Daniel M. and Matt S., Joy began as an acoustic duet in 2002. Their self-titled debut, a half-hour of folky 4-track twangling, offers subtle compositions that warble beneath idiosyncratic vocals—and fits comfortably into the Shrimper Records catalog. To date, Joy has shared the stage with Lou Barlow, Daniel Johnston, Holopaw (Sub Pop) the Fruit Bats (Sub Pop), and Scout Niblett (Secretly Canadian Records).

I won't expect for you to think "Boston" when you first hear Joy. But I did. Something about the sparse country-blues acoustic arrangements -- the double bass, the slide guitars, the delicate stick work -- conjures a brisk Boston eve for me. I can see my breath. I'm walking up Comm Ave, and the icy gales do nothing to cool the pleasant warmth I feel. That Matt Savage's quivering falsetto recalls Buckley's only strengthens my association. - Village Indian

"Emotional and eerie, but still accessible...His music, for now, is what keeps him from running into the woods, and will provide you, too, with some satisfying four-minute escapes." - Blackbook Magazine

I've been listening to Finian McKean's new alubum Shades Are Drawn. It's a truly lovely album that skips across many music genres. However, one steady image that this album conjures up for me is that of a smoky cabaret bar. Mr. McKean is center stage, guitar in hand, singing folky songs of love and sadness. - IndieDontDance

Finian McKean's "mood and melody is addictive." - One Louder
